The War Service Medal is awarded by the Sons of Confederate Veterans to honor individuals of Confederate ancestry who have served in our country's military service during wartime.
The General Jerome B. Robertson Camp 992 was pleased to be able to present this award to Compatriot Brennen Cline Machacek who served with the United States Marine Corps, 8th Engineers Support Battalion, in Afghanistan.
Brennen is the son of Ricky and Terra Machacek of Bellville. He joined the Marines in 2010 after graduating from Bellville High School. That year was a major turning point in the war in Afghanistan and Brennen soon found himself in the thick of the action. After the Taliban had overrun the British Royal Marines in Sangin, Afghanistan, the deadliest part of Afghanistan at the time, U.S. Marines were sent to assist the British and to eventually take over. Brennen began his duties as an armored transport driver and halfway through his tour of duty he was combat meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal. For the second half of his tour he volunteered for duty as a minesweeper.
Brennen spent four years in military service, being honorably discharged at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, on 3 January 2014.
